Nepal Teacher Saves Students as Flood Destroys School

A devastating flash flood in Nepal's Trishuli Valley created an emergency for students and teachers at Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School.

Principal Rajendra Dawadi received warnings that floodwaters were approaching and quickly ordered an evacuation. He also worked to stop school buses from moving toward the affected area.

Reports state that 1,643 students were evacuated before the flood reached the school. The three-storey school building was subsequently swept away.

The incident is a reminder that disaster preparedness is especially important for schools. Teachers can become critical decision-makers when students are unable to assess a rapidly changing situation themselves.

The story of Rajendra Dawadi is now receiving attention as an example of quick thinking during a natural disaster.
