Rivers are among the most important natural systems on Earth. They transport water and sediment, shape valleys and floodplains, and support ecosystems and human communities. But what are the different types of rivers? Rivers can first be classified by how long they carry water. Perennial rivers maintain flow throughout the year. Seasonal or intermittent rivers experience periods of flow and reduced or absent flow, often connected with seasonal rainfall. Ephemeral rivers flow only temporarily, commonly following rainfall events. Rivers can also be classified by their channel form. Meandering rivers develop pronounced bends, while braided rivers divide into multiple channels separated by sediment bars. Geographers also examine a river's upper, middle, and lower courses.
